Questions about getting a business website

Plain answers to what people usually ask before they get a website.

What is the difference between a domain and hosting?

A domain is your website's address, like yourbusiness.com. Hosting is the place where your website's files live, so people can open them.

You need both. With my landing page, portfolio and business website plans, your website is hosted free in your own Cloudflare account. You buy and own your domain, so the only yearly cost is the domain's renewal fee, paid to the company you bought it from.

What kinds of websites do you build?

I can build for any business that wants to be found and contacted, such as food and cake businesses, gift and jewellery shops, consultants and coaches, salons, caterers, event planners, photographers and other creatives. These are examples, not a limit. If you do not see your kind of business here, ask me.

A landing page or a portfolio suits one person showing their work. A business website suits a shop or company with several services. See my work for examples.

How much does a business website cost?

It depends on the plan: a landing page, a portfolio or a business website, or a custom website for anything beyond those, such as a cart, bookings, payments or special features. For a landing page, a portfolio or a business website, you pay once, and there is no monthly fee from me. A custom website is priced after we talk, and if it includes something that needs ongoing running, we agree that in writing before you pay anything.

The price ranges are on my plans. Your exact price comes in your proposal, before you pay anything.

Do I need a website if I already have Instagram or WhatsApp?

Instagram and WhatsApp are good for talking to people who already know you. A website is a page you own. Someone who searches for what you do can find it, and it holds your services, prices and terms in one place, so people do not have to ask you for them.

You can keep using both. The website becomes the place you send people.

How long does it take to build a website?

Your first preview is ready in 3 to 5 working days for a landing page, 4 to 7 for a portfolio and 7 to 10 for a business website. That is the first preview, not the day it goes live, because after you see it you ask for changes and then approve it.

The time starts when your deposit and all your details are in. A custom website's timeline is agreed with you in writing first.

Can I update my prices and words without a developer?

Yes. Every website comes with a private editor. You open your private link on your phone, change your own words, prices and pictures, and press Publish. There is undo and redo.

A few things are locked on purpose, like your bank details and legal pages, so they cannot be changed by accident. The editor is included in your first year, and after that it renews yearly on portfolio and business websites.

You can try the editor on a sample shop before you decide.

What is Cloudflare, and why is my website hosted there?

Cloudflare is a large internet company that hosts websites and helps them load fast. It has a free plan, so your website is hosted free, in your own Cloudflare account.

Because the account is yours, the website is yours. You can add me or remove me at any time. I never ask for your passwords. You invite me instead.

Who should own my domain name?

You should. Your domain is your business's address on the internet, so it belongs in your name, with your email. If a designer owns it, they can hold your address, and you can lose it if you part ways.

With me, you own your domain, and your website sits on it.

What do I need to send a web designer to start my website?

Your business name, a short description of what you do, your services and prices, your logo if you have one, your best photos, and the links you want shown, like Instagram or WhatsApp.

I send you a short details form where you type all of this and upload your logo and photos (pictures and PDFs). Videos are shared as links, for example from YouTube. If you have no logo, I can make you a simple one from your business name and colours.

What is the difference between a landing page, a portfolio website and a business website?

A landing page is one page that says who you are and makes it easy to contact you. A portfolio website shows your work across more pages. A business website has more pages for your services, details and questions.

Anything beyond these, such as a cart, bookings, payments or special features, is a custom website. It is priced after we talk. See the plans.

Will people find my website on Google?

Once your website is live, I submit it to Google for you. I also set up your page titles, descriptions, a sitemap and a preview for when you share your link. If I am not able to submit it myself, I send you a short guide so you can do it yourself.

Nobody can honestly promise a place on Google, because it depends on competition and takes time. What I can say is that your website will be set up the right way, so Google can read it easily.

What happens to my website if we stop working together?

It stays yours. It is hosted in your own account, on your own domain. I can give you a download of the whole website for a set fee, with a short note saying where your domain is registered, where it is hosted and when it renews. Any web developer can take it and continue.

The editor is my own tool, so it does not come with the download.

Can my website take orders or payments?

Yes, as part of a custom website. It can have a cart, bookings and online payments through a payment provider you choose, in your own account, so the money goes to you.

The scope and the price are agreed in writing before you pay a deposit, including anything that needs ongoing running.
